Interview! Chelsea Walker Flagg, author of I'd Rather Wear Pajamas

I’d Rather Wear Pajamas
by Chelsea Walker Flagg

Humor/Memoir

Everybody has the awesome opportunity to find their own strength and path through life. Some come about their self-discoveries through studying and working hard. Others (Chelsea) spend their time nearly burning down kitchens and driving around the country with a car full of hangers.

Chelsea grew up wanting to be “strong.” She thought arguing her way through childhood and becoming a world-class attorney would get her there. But, through a series of humorous, and only slightly embarrassing events, Chelsea comes to realize that maybe her strength is meant to shine in different ways.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
I really like mixing ice cream and nuts. Think Pralines and Cream, Pistachio, Corn Nuts. I’m kidding about that last one. Did you know Corn Nuts are neither corn nor nut? What a ripoff. Anyway, I prefer salty to sweet and my body usually runs cold, so ice cream isn’t really my go to. *Says while shoving a handful of Corn Nuts into her mouth.*

Which mythological creature are you most like?
I used to think I was like an elf because they’re always up to something slightly mischievous without being really naughty, and I imagine them to be little earthen hippie creatures, which is what my family calls me. Plus I have big ears. But now that I have three kids hanging off of me all the time, I’m pretty certain I’m that giant sea monster with a billion heads.

First book you remember making an indelible impression on you.
Catch 22. I read that book my Junior year in high school and have never viewed writing the same way. The first time I read it, I laughed through the entire thing. It was so random and quirky, I just loved it. The second time I read it, I cried through the entire thing. The characters were so sad and helpless in their situation. How could one book have such depth and create such opposing emotions in me? Because Joseph Heller, in my eyes, is a mad genius. He showed me what it means to write deeper.

How do you develop your plot and characters?
A couple of years ago, I read something floating around the Internet about how Pixar develops their plots and characters. It said to discount the first thing that comes to mind. And the second, and the third, etc. I love that. Get the basic information down, but then throw it away and delve deeper and deeper into the whole thing. Your characters have more personality than you originally give them.

Describe your writing space.

I seriously write wherever I can! My first choice is a coffee shop somewhere, where I can really just jump in. It’s hard to write at my house because I look around and think about all the other things I should be doing instead. But, since it’s illegal to leave my house while my children are napping or asleep, I usually end up writing on my couch. Every so often, if an idea comes to mind while my kids are running around, I’ll try (usually in vain) to lock myself in the bathroom to jot ideas down.

Chelsea was once obsessed with cats, longed to live in a big city, didn't think she would ever have children, and aspired to be an attorney. She now lives in Boulder, Colorado as a stay-at-home mom and comedic writer with her husband and three daughters. She has no current plans to own a cat.

    1. Ooh - it's a good one, Trix! Takes a lot of concentration though because it jumps chronologically all over the place. Awesome read, though!

  4. I actually think somewhere in the back of my head I knew Corn Nuts weren't actually nuts.
