Living or Retiring in Mexico - Leo Buijs

Living or Retiring in Mexico
by Leo Buijs

'Living or Retiring in Mexico' is a poignant collection of stories and practical information for anyone that wants to spend more time in Mexico, or would even be considering staying permanently. Written by a seasoned gringo, the book covers Mexican culture and history, how to make it workable, and what to expect in this foreign country and how to deal with it. From bringing goods into Mexico, medical and car insurance or buying property, handling utilities like water and gas to nachos and mescal. Many useful suggestions are shared, even for one who is not planning to be an expat, it’s informative and at times funny to anyone with an interest in Mexico. The 174-page book is a guide for people considering 'living the life', or retiring in Mexico, while seeing their retirement budget gain substantial spending power.

The book is divided into five parts: Introduction, The Fun Part, Food and Beverages, the Not So Fun Part and The Important Stuff. The latter deals with visas, medicals, becoming permanent resident etc. It will give a tremendous insight on 'Life in Mexico' through the eyes of an expat and will help you shape your opinion and decision making about living in Mexico, and figuring out if this would be the right thing for you.

Please Pass The Books Review:

Living or Retiring in Mexico: All You Need to Know Before You Go offers an insider's guide to all things expat, perfect for anyone looking into mid to long-term relocation. Comprehensive in its delivery, Buijs tackles the full-gamut of what to expect and includes a great deal of insight from his own personal experience. With the average age of retirement being pushed further down the road, Mexico, Central and South America have become increasingly popular options for many looking into other viable, sustainable alternatives. I think this book will also be useful to the huge and ever-growing collective of travel bloggers, most of who look for affordable home-bases outside of US and Canada.

For me, the most interesting section covered Mexican holidays. It's fascinating to read about the varied customs, traditions, and both national and religious holidays that the country has on offer. As a frequent tourist and expat myself, I found Buijs' guide to be practical and informative; an excellent stepping stone for anyone considering spending an extended amount of time off of the beaten path.

FOUR STARS

Born in the Netherlands, Leo Buijs immigrated to Canada in 1978, with his wife and two boys. He used to live in Victoria and moved to Courtenay B.C., where he lives now with his wife and his Dutch Sheepdog Femke.

In 2003 he wrote '50 Best Dog Walks around Victoria' which sold out very quickly including a second print. After his move up-island, the first print of 'Best Dog Walks on Vancouver Island' appeared in 2006 followed by a second print in 2008.

In 2010 he published the very popular 'BEERS of British Columbia,' a book about the then popular and upcoming Craft Beers and Micro-breweries development on the West Coast.

Besides dogs and craft beer, his foremost passion is travel, and he often takes his dog along the way. He also loves to sail and write. In 2015 he dug through thousands of photographs from his extensive travels to put a handsome photo-book together, first in a small format and recently in a larger coffee-table book with twice the number of photographs. 10% of the sales from this book go to UNICEF Canada to support children's poverty.

After his dog-walking books were out of print, the demand did not subside, so in the fall of 2015 he produced an updated and revised version of 'Best Dog Walks on Vancouver Island.' This updated edition is his third of its kind.

Some of his short stories were published in Whistler's ‘Pique Magazine’ and he was a regular contributor to ‘The Gringo Gazette,’ an English language paper in Baja California Sur. In 1999, he was featured in the June issue of ‘Boulevard Magazine,’ with winning photographs from Africa and South America.

In September 2016, he released 'A Taste of Living in Mexico' and in November the full-size book 'Living or Retiring in Mexico' was launched in print and as e-book.

She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

Erin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.

Have you ever craved something so badly that all reason was just an excuse getting in your way?
Have you needed something so desperately that you didn’t care how you got it or who you hurt in the process?
I have—and not that long ago.
Acceptance.
Acceptance… from family and friends…
Acceptance of the person I am inside and not outright rejection.
It didn’t come easily for me, and now I believe the world needs to know just how ruthless life can be. How that overwhelming yearning for acceptance can mold you into someone you don’t recognize when you look in the mirror. I’m through hiding behind one façade after another—it’s time for the world to meet the real me.
~Antoinette Justice

Paralegal by Day, Romance Author by Night! Guest Post by Sylvie Parizeau, author of Incandescently

Paralegal by Day, Romance Author by Night!
Guest Post by Sylvie Parizeau, author of Incandescently

The 10 ways I was able to balance my day job as a legal professional, and work on Incandescently...

1. Accepting that a perfectly balanced day is not always quite of this world ... even when you’re organized.
Still, I am so grateful for the following circumstances that helped pave my way through (my fit of the crazies), so that I could write (did I mention the crazies? :-D), and write some more...

2. A needed change of pace, leading us to leave big city life behind and move to the quiet and peacefulness of the country.

3. Working for my favorite attorney, my husband (are you reading over my shoulder, Grégoire? He is.). Well, you are my favorite attorney, unless we even when we work on weekends. (See? Told you, you were unequivocally my favorite!)

4. Working from our home office (thanks to intranets and high speed internet connexions) so NO commuting hours to and from downtown Montréal. A bit like working from the bat cave, we are virtually in Montréal.

5. Getting up at the crack of dawn and taking full advantage of ... NO commuting hours.

6. Having a separate reading/writing nook upstairs to keep both lives, well, separate.

7. Eating (pretty much) granola bars for supper for weeks on end, glued to my laptop upstairs; other meals (meaning lunch) generously provided (hot) by said favorite attorney/husband, downstairs. So I could stay glued to my desktop office computer and get the day’s work done and out of the way, but hey, such is life in the bat cave.

8. Acknowledging seven days a week, fourteen hours straight on the computer is a hard limit; my brain is fried after twelve hours. I won’t go into the seven days’ thing; you mentioned ways to balance... ;)

9. Living (under the proverbial rock) on top of a mountain, with no cell phone, *gasp*, no TV, *GASP*, and not much of a social life, *sigh* (refer to my fit of the crazies above). But then again, it’s amazing how much free time those three combined gives back, not to say it feeds my inner-introverted-self to perfection for now and I love it! Does that count for three ways to...? I think it does, so I’ll go for an ‘even dozen’ ways to.

10. Last but not least, now having two (very) grown-up sons out in the world, doing their wonderful and amazing things in their own, wonderful and amazing ways (who may or may not kill me if they ever read one of my stories)...

Want to peek some more inside my head? Feel free to visit my ‘About Me’ tab and peek under the Q&A toggles.

Season greetings from my winter wonderland, and happy reading holidays everyone!

All I knew was pain – a childhood filled with cruelty and villains who used and abused.

Until Éolie.

I first heard her sweet, angelical voice in the dark of night, when I lay bathed in my own impending death. Seventeen years later, it’s not the nightmare she pulled me out of that haunts me, but the glimpse of Happily Ever After she revealed just before disappearing.

They said she was a figment of my boundless imagination. A wish. A dream. Until I had no choice but to believe them, cherishing my imaginary savior the only way I knew how – in fiction and lore.

But fantasy has a way of transforming reality. When I finally tire of being a citizen of the world, I take an impromptu sabbatical as a professor at a small college on the coast of Maine. And there I see her, the girl with the sea-green eyes and angelic voice.

My world turns upside down. Turns out my girl is for real, and the pull between us is anything but imaginary.

Happily Ever After has a story … and this one is mine.

Spotlight! Marlene: A Novel of Marlene Dietrich - C.W. Gortner

Marlene: A Novel of Marlene Dietrich
C.W. Gortner
William Morrow, Harper Collins, 12/13/16
Historical Fiction/Contemporary Women/Biographical

Add to GR Button

From the gender-bending cabarets of Weimar Berlin to the tyrannical movie studios of Los Angeles, this sweeping story of passion, glamour, art, and war is a lush, dramatic novel of one of the most alluring legends of Hollywood’s golden age: Marlene Dietrich.

Raised in genteel poverty after the First World War, Maria Magdalena Dietrich dreams of a life on the stage. When her budding career as a violinist is cut short, she vows to become an actress, trading her family’s proper, middle-class society for the free-spirited, louche world of Berlin’s cabarets and drag balls. With her sultry beauty, smoky voice, and androgynous tailored suits, Marlene performs to packed houses and conducts a series of stormy love affairs that push the boundaries of social convention until she finds overnight success in the scandalous movie The Blue Angel.

For Marlene, neither fame nor marriage and motherhood can cure her wanderlust. As Hitler rises to power, she sets sail for America to become a rival to MGM’s queen, Greta Garbo. As one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies, she stars with such legends as Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Cary Grant. Desperate for her return, Hitler tries to lure her with dazzling promises. Defiant in her stance against the Nazis, Marlene chooses instead to become an American citizen, and after her new nation is forced into World War II, she tours with the USO, performing for Allied troops in Europe and Africa. But one day, she must return to Germany, where she will discover a heartbreaking secret amidst the war’s devastation that transformed her homeland and the family she loved.

An enthralling account of this extraordinary legend, MARLENE reveals the inner life of a woman of grit and ambition who defied convention, seduced the world, and forged her own path.

“Skillfully evokes the cross-dressing, sexually fluid atmosphere of the seedy nightclubs that helped Marlene define her unique appeal. Well-detailed and truly moving; an ambitious account of the German-American star. ” —Kirkus Reviews

“Full of the sizzle and decadence of Weimar Berlin, and the scandal and soirees of Hollywood’s golden era, this is a gloriously entertaining read. CW Gortner’s Marlene is utterly beguiling, the kind of woman who only comes along once in a century. Reader, you can’t take your eyes off her!” —Beatriz Williams, New York Times bestselling author

"From the ribald cabarets of Weimer-era Berlin to the glamour of golden-era Hollywood, beguilingly androgynous and fiercely passionate Marlene Dietrich . . . fairly leaps off every page." —Booklist, starred review

GLITTER
Aprilynne Pike
Pub. Date: October 25, 2016
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel—Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette in a near-future world where the residents of Versailles live like it’s the eighteenth century and an almost-queen turns to drug dealing to save her own life.

Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison.

When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates.

Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed.

But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.

Aprilynne Pike has been spinning faerie stories since she was a child with a hyper-active imagination. At the age of twenty she received her BA in Creative Writing from Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. When not writing, Aprilynne can usually be found at the gym; she also enjoys singing, acting, reading, and working with pregnant moms as a childbirth educator and doula. Aprilynne currently lives with her husband and three kids in Utah, and dreams of warmer climates.

Aprilynne Pike's #1 New York Times best-selling debut, WINGS, is the first of four books about a seemingly ordinary girl with a not-so-ordinary destiny. In this tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever...

Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

Guest Post! Location Research in France by Rebecca Bischoff, author of The French Impressionist

Location Research in France
by Rebecca Bischoff, author of The French Impressionist

When I began to write my novel, The French Impressionist, I wanted the French location to feel authentic to readers. I knew that would require research, but along the way I realized something. My research actually began long before I thought about writing my book.

In kindergarten I fell in love with a book called Arm and Arm by Remy Charlip, an American artist, writer, and choreographer. Because of his French name, I was certain he lived in France. From that young age I developed an obsession with all things French. When I got to high school and got to choose a foreign language to study, I, of course, chose French. Throughout high school and college, I studied French language and literature, took opportunities to travel to Europe to practice my French, and enjoyed getting to know a number of native speakers.

Because of that, I had many experiences to draw upon as I wrote The French Impressionist. I used my proficient (though not perfectly fluent) knowledge of French language and culture, along with my knowledge of the challenges involved in learning to speak another language. It helped me create characters that I felt were authentic. For example, when some of my French characters spoke in English, their word patterns were “colored” by French patterns of speaking. I also remembered my own awkward experiences in trying to make myself understood (or understand someone else) while struggling to learn a foreign language.

Beyond language differences, I also hoped to vividly portray the beautiful town of Nice, where my story takes place. Since I’d spent some time in France and in Italy along the Mediterranean coast, I took time to re-read my travel diaries to remember my impressions of Europe when I visited the first time. I also read travel blogs, watched informational and tourist videos (Rick Steves is great), and used Google Earth to research the specific location for my book.

I think that creating a vivid and authentic setting for a novel can be done well with help from the internet. But more than anything else, I believe it’s important to have personal, “real-life” experiences to share through your writing. My research for The French Impressionist really began long ago in a kindergarten classroom where I obsessively read a wonderful book filled with illustrations and poetry that made me (if mistakenly) dream of France.

Rosemary is fifteen and gloriously free, on her own for the very first time. Part of an exchange program for aspiring artists, she arrives in sunny southern France with a single goal: she doesn’t plan to leave, ever. She wants a new life, a new family, and a new identity. But her situation, crafted from lies big and small, is precarious.
Desperate to escape haunting images from her past and a stage one helicopter parent, Rosemary struggles to hide her lack of artistic talent and a communication disorder that has tormented her all her life. She believes her dream of a new start will come true, until she unwittingly finds herself enveloped in a decades-old mystery that threatens to ruin her only chance for success. Determined to stay, Rosemary must choose whether or not she’ll tell the biggest lie of all, even if it means destroying the life of someone she cares about.
Dramatic, heartwarming, and full of teenage angst, The French Impressionist perfectly captures the struggle of those who feel they have no voice, and also shows the courage it takes to speak up and show the world who we really are.

Spotlight! The Semper Sonnet - Seth Margolis

THE SEMPER SONNET
SETH MARGOLIS

Add to GR Button

In this stunning thrill ride, perfect for fans of Dan Brown and Steve Berry, a long-lost manuscript, written for Elizabeth I, holds the key to unlocking the past—and to eliminating the future.
Lee Nicholson is ready to take the academic world by storm, having discovered a sonnet she believes was written by William Shakespeare. When she reads the poem on the air, the words put her life in peril and trigger a violent chase, with stakes that reach far beyond the cloistered walls of academia.
Buried in the language of the sonnet, in its allusions and wordplay, are secrets that have been hidden since Elizabethan times, secrets known only to the queen and her trusted doctor, but guessed at by men who seek the crown and others who seek the world. If the riddles are solved, it could explode what the world knows of the great Elizabeth I. And it could release a pandemic more deadly than the world has ever imagined.
Lee’s quest for the answers buried in the sonnet keeps her one step ahead of an international hunt—from the police who want her for murder, to a group of men who will stop at nothing to end her quest, to a madman who pursues the answers for destructive reasons of his own.
As this intelligent thriller moves back and forth between Tudor England and the present day, Lee begins to piece together the meaning behind Shakespeare’s words, carrying the story to its gasp-out-loud conclusion.
