Spotlight! Forget Me Not - Allison Whitmore

Cover Forget Me Not (1)

Theodora “Teddi” Donovan and Calvin Wynne have always hated each other. They didn't have a choice after Teddi's bootlegger father killed Calvin's and left them both orphaned. The scandal has fueled gossip in quiet, quaint Brookhurst, New York, for over a decade. When a friendship develops between them as teenagers, they are ridiculed and shunned by the strict society that dictates life in their town. As they grow older, friendship turns into love, and Teddi and Calvin have to choose between their future and the scepter of their past. Spanning continents and decades, Forget Me Not is a coming-of-age story about truth, self-reliance, and the freeing power of love.

Spotlight! Always Second Best - Elodie Nowodazkij

ASB

Sometimes being first isn’t what you expected.
Seventeen-year-old ballerina Emilia Moretti is tired of always being second best. And she’s going to prove the world she deserves to be first. In her upcoming School of the Performing Arts showcase. In the eyes of her birth parents. And in the heart of the guy she loves. She spends hours rehearsing, hours dreaming about becoming number one, hours imagining how her entire life is about to change. But when nothing goes the way she planned, she’ll need to realize what it really means to be first.
Eighteen-year-old Nick Grawski doesn’t want to follow Daddy Dearest’s rules any longer. He’s going to prove he’s meant to be a dancer—not a lawyer—and he is not going to stay away from Em just because his father demands it. He needs to show Em that—this time around—he’s there to stay and that he won’t break her heart again. Even when her world goes down to shit, even when he finds out his dad may have been trying to protect him all along, even if being there for one another is harder than falling in love.
ALWAYS SECOND BEST is a novel of hope and heartbreak and broken dreams. It’s a novel about falling in love and discovering that being first isn’t always what matters.

What's a little engagement between friends?

Omar Esterly is married to his job. But when Omar sets his sights on a potential, family-oriented client, his confirmed bachelorhood becomes a problem. Fortunately, his friend and employee, Devi Boss, has the perfect plan...

Okay, so it wasn't exactly Devi's plan to become her friend's fake fiancée. Lies aren't her style. However, Omar offers her a big, beautiful raise - enough to track down the missing father she's never known - and Devi reluctantly agrees to the whole engagement hoax...

This was supposed to be a no-strings-attached win-win for both Devi and Omar, but when they cross the line between friendship and...well, something more, Devi realizes she's made a huge mistake that just might cost her both job and friend - falling for her fiancé.

EXCERPT

He checked his watch. “Lunch will be over if you…”

The bathroom door squeaked slightly as it opened, and he turned. His heart galloped, then went into a full-blown stampede.

Devi walked across the room. Although her hair fell down past her chest in two loosely gathered pigtails, they bounced with each step. So shiny, he wanted to reach out and touch the fullness, grab a handful, and smell. Hell, he wanted to slide her hair from the two flower clips and tangle his fingers through the silky-looking waves. She chose that moment to spin in a circle.

“What do you think? Too old school?”

“What?”

“The suit. I bought it on a fifties replica website online. I like the style, but I know most people don’t swim in suits like this. It’s a swimdress actually. Don’t you love the cute black and white polka dots? I adore polka dots. And how it gathers at the waist, and the sweetheart neckline, how cool…”

Her words were lost to him. All his focus centered on the rays of sunlight illuminating her face as her mouth moved, each word forming on glossy red lips but never quite reaching his ears. The way her eyelashes fluttered over her cheeks as she inspected her suit, tugging at the waistline and running her fingers along the edge of material that nestled against the swell of her breasts.

And then there were her legs. Where the hell did she get legs like that? Long, toned, and tanned the perfect shade of light brown. They looked smooth, and his fingers ached to reach out and touch them.

What the hell? He’d seen her legs thousands of times when she wore a dress—the mainstay of her wardrobe— even caught glimpses of her upper thigh from time to time, but to see the entire package…

Holy shit! She spun around again.

“O, I want your opinion.”

Damn. Her legs were incredible, but her ass. That suit did amazing things to her ass. He couldn’t stop staring, and when she turned back around to face him he craned his neck to try to follow the view.

Spotlight! Don't Make Me Beautiful - Elle Casey

Beautiful

No one knew a woman lived there or that she even existed. A monster, living in darkness…

At twenty-two, Nicole doesn’t even look human anymore. The beast made sure of that. So she hides. A monster, consigned to a life of fear and solitude. This is all she deserves, she is quite sure of that.
And then one day out of the blue, the autographed baseball caught by Brian Jensen at the latest Marlins game enters her prison and manages to turn her world completely upside down.

Temptation comes in the form of pity at first, and then perhaps something more. Does she dare to believe the things she’s told, that this is not the life she was meant to live? That being a monster is not her forever-fate? And will she be willing to risk everything, to reach out and accept the helping hands around her and share her deepest, darkest secrets? She knows only too well that hands can hurt. Finding out whether they can also heal is a risky proposition, especially when the beast is still out there. Looking for her.

BILLY AND THE CLONEASAURUS - Stephen Kozeniewski

Six billion identical clones make up the entire population of Earth, and William 790-6 (57th Iteration) is exactly like everybody else. In his one year of life he will toil in suburban mediocrity and spend as much cash as possible in order to please his corporate masters. When 790’s first birthday (and scheduled execution) finally rolls around, a freak accident spares his life. Living past his expiration date changes 790 profoundly. Unlike other clones he becomes capable of questioning the futility of his own existence. Seeking answers in the wilderness, he discovers a windmill with some very strange occupants, including a freakish, dinosaur-like monstrosity. Which is especially strange since every animal on earth is supposed to be extinct… Dark, haunting, and blisteringly satirical, BILLY AND THE CLONEASAURUS is the story of one “man’s” attempt to finally become an individual in a world of copies.

REVIEW: This was a quick and enjoyable read. It was easy enough to follow, funny enough make me smile on a blustery afternoon, and unique enough to keep it fun and interesting. I enjoyed the context of a world full of Williams and the author's building of a society where everyone looks the same, behaves the same, does the same. There's not a lot of build up as to why, but if I'm totally honest, there isn't a lot of need for it. Kozeniewski has done a superb job in creating an environment that allows for complete reader immersion. Our protagonist, William, is an equally well portrayed character who breaks the mold and, through a fluke, starts to become an individual (as opposed to just another cookie-cutter William). With a little more fleshing out to smooth out timeline issues and a more measured pace, this would be a five-star read. Still, as is, Stephen Kozeniewski has produced a singular story that fits the bill for anyone looking for a quick and entertaining read.

The Silver Butterfly - Uma Mawaery

First of all, let me start by saying the cover is gorgeous. I'm not someone who would generally pluck a fantasy novel off the shelf as a first choice book selection (although I have been known to), but I admit I was drawn in by this one. It got even better once I folded back into the first pages.

I'm of the opinion that books venturing onto the precarious and delicate balance of magic and real life tend to slide towards the unbelievable in either direction. What Mawaery has done in The Silver Butterfly is counterbalance the two to create a story that is both entertaining and convincing, without any sacrifice of real life credibility. Amber is authentic in her pain and her journey is complex, but still measured. She is the every-woman of heartbreak and suffering, with a special and layered connection to the mysteries of the supernatural. She's also funny which, frankly, was the touch a character painted with a less skilled hand might have been lacking. She's likeable and endearing, as are the people who care for her (the Harpers and Deb, in particular). Radley is equally complicated, carrying the yin to Amber's yang brilliantly (and, again, believably). He's a bit of a wild card and it takes some time to feel connected to him, but the development is natural and very well done.

The Silver Butterfly is not a light read and weaves the dark themes of dispossession, suffering, and betrayal with just the right amount of hope to keep the suspense in check. The descriptions are superb and, ultimately, it's the originality of a story that intertwines Amber's paranormal gift and the reality of a young woman's search for what we all desire that makes this book a five-star read.
